Grænuvellir Kindergarten/Preschool

The Kindergarten Grænuvellir offers service for children from 1 – 5/6 years of age. The kindergarten has seen a growing number of students in the recent years, now offering place to 128 students, ages one to five and 43 staffmembers. Grænuvellir Kindergarten has successfully implemented a program called Positive Discipline into all aspects of teachings and communications. Positive Discipline is designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities.


Borgarhólsskóli Elementary School

Borgarhólsskóli is an Elementary School serving students from 6 – 16 years of age. Students during school year 2017 – 2018 are 283 and 57 staff members. Borgarhólsskóli has, as well as Grænuvellir Kindergarten, implemented the program of Positive Discipline into all aspects of teachings. Positive Discipline is designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities.

An afterschool program is offered for children in 1st through 4th grade. The afterschool program operates next door to Borgarhólsskóli and sports hall.


Framhaldsskólinn á Húsavík / FSH

Framhaldsskólinn á Húsavík is a Comprehensive Secondary School offering education to students from 16 to 20+ years of age. As of 2017 around 100 students attend FSH and the number of staff is 16. FSH is operated by the Icelandic State Department of Education.

A Youth Center is operated by the Municipality for young students, aged 14 to 20 to gathers for all kinds of activities. The Youth Center is located in FSH.


Húsavík Music School

Norðurþing operates a Music School, open to all residents of the municipality seeking music education, whether they are children of school age or adults. It offers a variety of instrumental and vocal education, as well as a school choir and a women‘s choir. The school works closely with Elementary schools and kindergartens in the Municipality. Management as well as the largest establishment is in a specially designed part of Borgarhólsskóli´s housing in Húsavík, giving students the opportunity to step out of regular classes to attend music lessons.


The Húsavík Academic Center (HAC) / Þekkingarnet Þingeyinga

Þingeyinga or Húsavík Academic Center (HAC) is dedicated to promoting and facilitating lifelong learning, university studies and interdisciplinary research.  The center is located in the harbor area of Húsavík. HAC offers academic, vocational and recreational courses and study programs to people in the community in collaboration with universities and regional parties of interest, such as municipalities, labor organizations and the business community. HAC also provides study facilities for students who live in the region and attend university or other schools at upper educational levels.

HAC offers Icelandic courses and lessons for new residents and others interested.


Kópasker and Lundur

Preschool and Elementary Departments of Öxarfjörður School

Öxarfjörður School operates two preschool departments along with elementary department for the community from Kelduhverfi to Melrakkaslétta in the east. Two preschool departments operate in Öxarfjörður School, one located in Kópasker and the other one in Lundur along with the elementary school department. The Kópasker department is open as long as four or more children are signed up on May 1st each year. During the summer months, only one department is operated, location depends on where more children are signed up. Öxarfjörður Preschool Departments build partly on John Dewey's ideology and Lev Vygotsky´s theories.

Raufarhöfn school operates a preschool department as well as an Elementary depertment for the village of Raufarhöfn.
